Attention all “unusual pet” owners!!
Kevin Turner, former owner of the Exotic Pet Referral Centre in Auckland has joined Mill Road. Kevin is experienced in treating birds, rabbits and other small mammals and reptiles.
Since he joined us, we have purchased specialised equipment to treat exotic pets and Kevin has been training the team to provide the special care they require. We provide care to our own clients’ pets and also take referrals from vets around Northland.
Here’s a bit more background:
Kevin Turner studied at Massey University, graduating in 1996. He gained experience in small animal practice in Auckland and voluntary work in Samoa, before becoming the owner of Lynfield Vet Clinic in 2006.
A growing fascination with the more unusual pets led him to set up Auckland’s Exotic Pet Referral Centre in 2008, with a focus on providing expert care to birds, small mammals & reptiles. He also treated the turtles, sharks and penguins at Kelly Tarltons!
He became a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) and the Australian Vet Association special interest group for exotic vets. He completed postgraduate training in Avian Medicine through Massey and presented papers to conferences in Australia on various exotic animal topics.
In 2014, with the delights of the winterless north beckoning, he left the rat-race and moved to Northland. Auckland’s loss is our gain! Kevin is now available to see exotic pets from around Northland and is helping our team to provide a similar level of service to unusual pets as we always have to cats and dogs. He’s also enjoying increased exposure to native birds through our association with the Whangarei Bird Recovery Centre. Of course he is also an experienced and compassionate cat and dog vet.
Outside of work Kevin loves to head out to sea for some fishing & he has great aspirations to grow the local population of native birds on his little piece of paradise.
If you have any unusual pets at home, we recommend a regular check up, just like cats and dogs (and humans!) We often pick up little issues with diet or husbandry that can make a big difference to their overall health.
Call us at the clinic to book an appointment and to arrange what to bring along with you.
